The sun peeked over the green hills to wake up the farm. Pippa, with her red pigtails bouncing, skipped toward the wooden coop. She was excited to visit her best friend, a golden bird named Penny the Hen.

Penny the Hen clucked a happy greeting as Pippa opened the gate. Today, Pippa wanted to learn how Penny made her wonderful eggs. She sat down on a hay bale and watched her fluffy friend very closely.

Making an egg is hard work and takes a lot of energy! Pippa filled a blue bowl with crunchy grains and seeds. Penny the Hen pecked at the food quickly because she needed nutrients to grow her eggs.

Next, Pippa checked the water trough to make sure it was clean and cool. Chickens need to drink plenty of water to stay healthy. Penny took a long sip and tilted her head back to let it splash down.

Penny spent the afternoon scratching in the dirt for tasty bugs and clover. This gave her extra vitamins and made her feel strong. Pippa cheered whenever Penny found a wiggly worm near the big garden fence.

As the sun began to set, Penny looked for a safe place to rest. Inside her body, a tiny yolk was growing into a beautiful egg. Pippa made sure the nesting box was filled with soft, warm straw.

Penny the Hen hopped into her cozy box and fluffed her golden feathers. She sat very still and kept her body warm all through the night. While Pippa slept in her bed, Penny was busy working hard.

Early the next morning, Pippa heard a loud 'Cluck, cluck, cadawk!' from the coop. This was Penny's special song to say that she was finished. Pippa rushed outside in her pajamas to see what her friend had left.

Pippa reached into the soft straw and found one perfect, smooth brown egg. It felt slightly warm in her hand. She thanked Penny for the gift and gave the golden hen a gentle pat on her soft back.

Finally, Pippa carried the egg inside to share a healthy breakfast with her family. She knew that happy, healthy chickens give the very best eggs. And from that day on, she always took great care of Penny.
