A story to share together
The Glow of Ten
Nia and her Grandpa Solomon arrange glowing lanterns in the community greenhouse, discovering how different combinations always sum to ten while preparing for a festive evening celebration.

The community greenhouse hummed with evening magic. Sunlight faded, leaving behind a soft, emerald glow. Nia skipped through the rows of ferns, her yellow overalls bright against the deep green leaves. Grandpa Solomon followed slowly, his silver locs catching the last golden rays of the day. It was finally time for the lantern celebration.

Grandpa Solomon opened a wooden crate. Inside, ten plain lanterns waited, dark and still. He handed one to Nia. She touched the switch, and it flickered to life, casting a warm glow on her face. Together, they carefully placed the lanterns on a long, mossy stone table. Let us see how they shine best, he said.

Nia lined them all up in a single, glowing row. She counted them one by one, tracing the light with her finger. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten. They looked like a string of fallen stars resting on the moss. The whole greenhouse felt cozy and bright under their watchful eyes.

Nia decided to change the view. She moved three lanterns to the left side and seven to the right side. The total remained the same, just gathered in two different groups. Look, Grandpa, she whispered. Three and seven make ten. It is like a secret dance of light that never changes its rhythm.

Grandpa Solomon nodded, his eyes twinkling. He gently slid two lanterns away from the group of seven, creating a new pattern. Now we have five on one side and five on the other, he noted. Nia giggled, seeing the balance. Five and five also make ten. They are perfectly matched, just like us.

Nia wanted to try another way. She grouped eight lanterns near a large sunflower pot and left two tucked near the edge. Eight and two, she counted aloud. It is just another way to hold all ten. The lanterns cast long, dancing shadows against the glass walls, making the greenhouse feel infinite.

Suddenly, one lantern flickered and dimmed. Nia reached for it, but Grandpa Solomon held up a hand. Wait, look closely, he said. We have nine lanterns glowing brightly. How many more do we need to make ten? Nia looked at the empty spot. She knew the answer was hiding in the quiet dark.

Nia gently tapped the dark lantern. It sparked, glowed, and joined the others. Nine and one make ten, she cheered. The light returned, filling the gaps and making the whole table sparkle once more. The greenhouse seemed to exhale, happy to be complete. Everything was back in its place, shining just right.

They stepped back to admire their work. Whether in groups of five or eight or nine, the ten lanterns always filled the space with the same golden warmth. It was a beautiful puzzle they had solved together. The night air outside was cool, but inside, they were wrapped in a blanket of soft light.

Hand in hand, they walked toward the greenhouse door. The lanterns remained behind, a steady, glowing heart for the garden. They were ready for the celebration now. Nia looked up at her grandfather and beamed. Ten lights, ten ways to shine, she said. And they walked home under the quiet, starlit sky.
